Excerpt from the SARATOGA SUN Wyo newspaper ... March 1, 1906 - Freezes Feet Samuel Fytes came in Friday night from the ranch of Robert Middlewood, 30 miles west of here to obtain help for ABRAHAM HARTMAN, an old German prospector, 66 years of age, who had been wandering on the hogbacks between Saratoga and Rawlins for a week without food or shelter, other than a sagebrush fire at night. The old man left Rawlins, Monday the 12th inst., with 25 cents worth of provisions and 5 cents worth of matches, bound for Saratoga, and expected to be out only one night. He got bewildered and wandered around until the following Sunday, when he appeared at the Middlewood ranch, nearly famished, and where they soon discovered the miserable plight the poor man was in. They took care of him until it became certain that he would have to have medical aid, when Mr. Fytes was dispatched to this place. The county authorities at Rawlins were communicated with when the ambulance was sent out from that place and the man was sent to the Wyoming General Hospital at Rock Springs. It is feared that he will loose (sic) both feet, as all his toes and the bottom clear around both feet were frozen stiff. Later- Word was received here yesterday morning that Rawlins parties had tried for three days to reach the Middlewood ranch from that place, but were unable to do so on account of the snow. Geo. W. Sisson left here early yesterday morning with a rig for the Middlewood ranch, and HARTMAN will be brought out and taken to the railroad at Walcott. Notify Administrator about this message?
