Teresa, I too have been confronted with the name "The Black Dutch". My mother decended from a line of Banning who were orginally from England. Some of them migrated to Holland and were involved with the Dutch aristocrats. An Elizabeth Banning had a son who was the Captian of the Dutch militia which Rembrant painted in the "Night Watch"
Since my grandfather and his brothers told all of their children and grandchildren that thier ancestors were "Black Dutch", I started to research the term at our local TAMU Library. I talked with a history professer and checked out numerous books. I could never prove anything, but the resident professer in the Archives and some of the autors in the books stated that the term "Black Dutch" came from the decendants of the Dutch and Spanish marriages. Spain occupied Holland for about 600 years and there were many inter marriages between the Spainards and Dutch. These children were darker skinned and had darker hair and eyes than the fair and blonde Dutch and were labeled the "Black Dutch" I make no clains as to the truth of all this. Just stating facts as presented by others.
I do know that the term "Black Dutch" was used long before the Dutch mixed with the American Indians. I've read that some researchers clain they are decendants of African Americans and Dutch marriages and are "Black Dutch"
Perhaps we will never know for sure?
