Dors anyone have any information on C.C. Yaw mentioned below.

WELL KNOWN MAN LOSES HIS LIFE IN AN AFFRAY AT PARIS.
JOE COPELAND, A DALLAS MAN, ENGAGED IN A SHOOTING AFFRAY AT PARIS
TUESDAY NIGHT, AND WAS WOUNDED IN THE BODY. HE DIED YESTERDAY
MORNING. THE BODY WAS SHIPPED HERE FOR BURIAL.
MR. COPELAND WAS ABOUT 42 YEARS OF AGE. A WIFE AND THREE CHILDREN
SURVIVE HIM. THEY LIVE IN THIS CITY, AS DOES DR. ADAMS, OF EAST DALLAS,
THE FATHER-IN-LAW OF THE DECEASED. MR. COPELAND’S FATHER ALSO
RESIDES HERE. THE DECEASED WAS A MEMBER OF THE FRATERNAL ORDER OF
EAGLES AT PARIS.HE WAS BORN IN GONZALAS.

FEW MEN IN THE SOUTHWEST HAVE HELD A LARGER ACQUAINTANCE THAN JOE
COPELAND. ON THE
BORDER HE WAS KNOWN A “SMILING JOE,” FOR THE REASON THAT THERE WAS
ALWAYS A SMILE ON HIS LIPS IN TIMES OF DANGER. IN EL PASO, JUST PRIOR TO
THE FIGHT BETWEEN MEHER AND FITZSIMMONS, COPELAND WAS ASSAULTED
BY A GANG OF ROUGHS ONE NIGHT AND KNOCKED DOWN. WHEN HE REGAINED
HIS FEET HE HAD A SIX-SHOOTER IN EACH HAND AND THE MANNER IN WHICH
HE USED THEM IS STILL THE SUBJECT FOR WONDERING COMMENT IN THAT
COUNTRY. THE ROUGHS MADE A REPLY IN KIND, BUT HE ESCAPED UNHURT.

THE NEXT MORNING FOURTEEN BULLET HOLES WERE FOUND IN A PLATE OF
GLASS WINDOW JUST BEHIND THE PLACE WHERE HE HAD STOOD.-DALLAS
NEWS.

JOE COPELAND, WHOSE REAL NAME WAS PLEAS WATSON, WAS WELL KNOW IN
SAN ANGELO. HE WAS A BROTHER OF MRS. DUDLEY TOM, OF THIS CITY, AND IN
1880 KILLED A SOLDIER BECAUSE THE LATTER LAID A LIVE COAL OF FIRE IN HIS
HAND. AFTER THIS AFFAIR HE CHANGED HIS NAME TO JOE COPELAND, AND
WENT BY THAT TITLE UNTIL AFTER HIS TRIAL IN 1883. HE WAS ACQUITTED OF
THE CHARGE OF MURDER, BEING DEFENDED BY JUDGES J. W. TIMMINS AND
MILTON MAYS. THE NAME OF COPELAND, HOWEVER, STUCK TO HIM,
THOUGH MANY PERSONS BOTH AT PARIS AND DALLAS KNEW HIM BY HIS REAL
NAME OF WATSON.
COPELAND WAS A BROTHER ALSO OF MRS. C. C. YAW, OF SUTTON COUNTY,
AND HAS A BROTHER
LIVING. HIS FATHER AND MOTHER BOTH DIED IN GONZALES COUNTY, HENCE
THE STATEMENT IN THE NEWS THAT HIS FATHER LIVES IN DALLAS IS AN ERROR.
- SAN ANGELO STANDARD.
