Help Please With Yeager Search

I am searching for information on my wifes ancestors. Little information as been found about her great grandfather and his ancestors. His name was Adolf Yeager or Yager and he lived in St. Clair County, Illinois, and Lebanon, Missouri. He probably lived in other states but we have no record of that.

Adolf Yeager was born in the Baden area of Germany in 1836. We do not know when he came to America, however, on May 20, 1864 he married Mary Kleopha Rotzinger in St. Clair County, Illinois. In about 1867 they moved to Lebanon, Missouri. I believe Adolf was a protestant before his marriage because he had to take classes at the Catholic Church before his marriage. Adolf died June 30, 1876. We do not know the cause of his death. The 1870 censes lists him as a farmer. Mary Kleopha kept a family Bible. She said in it that Adolphus Jaeger was born in 1836. That was probably his German name.

One story that has been passed down is that Adolf and his parents and his siblings were on their way to America and the father died at sea. When they arrived in America the mother indentured (or something similar) the older children (including Adolf) to get money for passage back to Germany for her and the younger children. Does that sound familiar to anyone on this forum?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
