In 922 AD Ibn Fadlan embarked on jouney with Buliwyf, a viking chieftan. This story is related in "Eaters of the Dead," by Michael Crichton. Apparently, Ibn Fadlan was a capable scribe and recorded his account of the story. Two sources even for a legend makes for reason to consider this further.
