Thomas Youell (a/k/a Youl, Youlle, Yowell, Yowill, Ewell, etc.) was born in England between about 1614 and 1618. He likely came to Virginia as an indentured servant about 1634, and became associated with William Claiborne, who established a trading post on Kent Island (now part of Maryland).

Probably in early 1641, Thomas Youell courted and married Ann Sturman, daughter of Thomas and Ann (Porter??) Sturman, who had arrived on Kent Island from England in 1640. Thomas and Ann (Sturman)Youell then had three children in fairly quirk order, including sons Thomas and William (born about 1641 and 1643) and a daughter Ann, born circa 1645.

Before 1650, this family had relocated to the Northern Neck of Virginia, near Nomini (a/k/a Nomany, Nomine, etc.) Creek. The Youells had two more children, Winifred and Richard, and then Thomas died before February 1656 (new style). Until 1653, it had been Northumberland County, VA, and thereafter became Westmoreland County.

The widow Ann (Sturman) Youell then remarried (ca. 1659-1662), to Augustine Hull, who I believe was a recent widower with a daughter of his own, Ann Hull. The Hulls then had a daughter Penelope, born ca. 1660-1663. Augustine Hull died between about 1668-1669, and then Ann Hull wrote her Will in May 1670, which was probated in 1672 (in Westmoreland). As of 1670, her daughter Ann Youell was still single.

I am working on a THEORY that this Ann Youell, born ca. 1645, married ca. 1672 or 1673 one Luke Thornton. Within a few years, they moved to neighboring Richmond County.

If anyone has any information about Ann Youell, daughter of Thomas and Ann (Sturman) Youell of colonial Virginia, please contact me directly at duaneaboggs@live.com.
