Henry Zabel

I am trying to find out something about my grandfather, Henry (or Henri) Zabel, who died in early 1916 in California and is buried in Berkeley. Family lore has it that his father was born in France and taught at the Sorbonne. I have always believed that this side of the family was French. But none of the geneology I find on the Internet reveals any French Zabels. (I am speculating that a Germanic origin may have been disguised because of the unpopularity of the Germans in the USA during WWI.

I do know that his son (my uncle) Henry Zabel sometime in the 50's moved from California to somewhere in North or South Dakota.
