Laura: Here is another suggestion. Since you have your great grandfather's birth date and approximate death date you can find out his parents by writing to New Jersey Vital Statistics. I believe their office is in Trenton, NJ. There is a fee for this however, but because of his birth date and date of death you should be able to find listed on both certificiates the names of his parents. After you have that information, you can look at the 1880, 1870, and 1860 census for Lewis' family. It give you more information. Also find his obituary in the newspaper. THere may be parents and siblings listed there as well.
