My understanding is that the name Zacharias is the Greek version of the Hebrew name Zechariah. However, nearly all of the Zachariases I've ever met are of German background, with ancestors who lived in Russia, Ukraine, or Poland. (This includes my own family line). That does not necessarily mean that somewhere in the distant past, we didn't have a Jewish forefather with that last name.

Last night I came across a Jewish physicist name Jerrold R. Zacharias (1905-1986) while doing a web search on the atomic element cesium. He made many important contributions to physics, national defense, and education. He was especially noted for his work on the development of the extremely accurate cesium atomic clock.
