Well, I'm not an expert, but I have at least one Jewish Zacharias in my family that hails from Bomst, Germany. They are reputed to have been matzoh bakers, so I suspect they were most definately Jewish.

That doesn't necessarily mean that all Zachariases everywhere were Jewish, including yours -- although that bit about swearing on the Old Testament is a good clue. Last names aren't indicative of the religion of the family, even two hundred years ago.
