Believed to be widowed before 1857. Oral history says she came to Iowa in 1857 with parents and the family. Her father is said to have built a log cabin on the Nodaway River for her and her son. Her husband was probably of the Zane family that founded Zanesville, Ohio. Source: Ruth Gourley? - Birth 22 Oct 1803. She does not appear in the 1860 census for Montgomery County, Iowa.

!RELATIONSHIP: [See note for Robert Gourley, RIN 42. He lists the 10 children of Thomas and Catherine Gourley and does not mention an Elizabeth or Betsy. He does mention an infant who died, so it seems strange he would not have mentioned his sister who was supposedly living at least as late as 1894.]

Elaine Artlip: 20 Sept. 1894, Villisca (Iowa) Review: "Mrs. John Richards and Mrs. Betty Zane of Zanesville, Ohio, are visiting Gourleys."

The Review entry suggests that "Betty" or "Betsy" may not have stayed in Iowa, but returned to Ohio. We have not located her in any census record in either state.

The Dunn family record "Genealogy of Thomas Dunn Family" has a statement that Nancy/Jane Gourley, Betsy's aunt who married Tom Dunn, was a descendant of the Zane family. This would indicate that Betsy's grandmother, the wife of Robert Gourley, was a Zane. It might also explain why Betsy and her sister who married John Richards both lived in Zanesville, a town founded by the Zanes.

This is what I have in my notes for Betsy or Elizabeth. She is still a mystery to us. I have not worked on this line for a few years. I did help a couple of young women join the Daughters of the American Revolution under their Zane ancester years ago. I haven't been able to join these two families.
