Hi Veronica. My family is from the region of Tolima in the upper Magdalena River. They are Zarate and we heard that the family-name is originally from Northern Spain. In the basque language means something like "a spot in a small forest" or rather "a small forest". There are many castilians with basque names (because of the repopulation policies of the christian knights). I do not know if it helps.
