Dear Michael. I am originally from Colombia and my grandma's family is Zarate. We heard that a spaniard conqueror came to the region of Tolima and he was the stem of the family. I heard also that Zarate is a family name from Northern Spain and that means in basque something like "a small wood" or "a clear spot in the forest". Better to confirm.
Good Luck. Edgar.
