Hi Edgra, my name is also Edgar (my father's name is Eliecer Merchan Zarate). His family is from Tolima (central Colombia) and, as far as we know, they arrived early in the spanish colonization period. Eventhough we do not know the exact place from they came, we heard that the family name if from Northern Spain, it has a meaning in Basque (Vasco): "small forest" or "clear spot in the forest". That's all I Know. Where are the Zarates in the Philippines concentrated?
Edgar
