Zarate in Colombia

My father's family is from Northern Tolima - Colombia (Merchan - Zarate. The Zarates came from Northern Spain (don't know the rovince?) and, as I understand, It was very early in the colonial period. There were Zarates in the capital of Tolima (Ibague), in Piedras (where they first settle, Armero and other cities. Some of them died in Armero (in the volcano tragedy of 1985). Any help to localize the place of origin?
Any further info? Edgar Merchan Hamann.
