My great-grandfather's name was Barnett Zaretsky. He came to New York from Lithuania in the early 20th Century. Beyond that, it's been impossible to extract any information about him from my family members. His son (my grandfather) was born Jacob Zaretsky, but changed his name to Jack Barnett, and refused to talk about the Zaretsky name (a product of the era, I suppose.) As a result, none of the ensuing generations ever found much out about our patriarch and his surname.
I am quite curious about my ancestry, and about how many Zaretskys are out there lurking around. I have entertained the possibility of eventually changing my surname back to Zaretsky, but I want to find out more about the history of it first. So, any input or insight is welcomed! Thanks.
