Carol: I now have a conjecture and a few facts for you. Conjecture: The picture is of Martin Rupp Zearing and his second wife Mrs. Fannie E. Garten. The History of Bureau County, IL, states that Mrs. Garten was the widow of E.D. Garten by whom she had five children, 1) Mrs. Mary Cary, of Joliet, IL, 2)William, 3) Melchard, 4) Emma, and 5) Laura B. If my conjecture is correct then the man in the picture is not your blood relative but the woman is.
The 1900 Federal Census of Bureau County lists Martin R. Zearing with wife Fannie E. an daughter Laura Garten. Clearly Laura was a step-daughter.
