Hi Lori,
It is possible that this family is somehow related although it would seem more likely that they would have settled near each other when they first came to this country. My August Zeiser had children born in New York City and in Brooklyn. He had his business (a saloon) there and is buried in Brooklyn, too. I doubt he ever went to Illinois or MO. Even though it would seem that they would have chosen to live near each other, you never know. Do you know why your great grandfather chose IL or MO to live? Was land cheap and available there? Was he a farmer? Could he have come to NY first and then headed West for some reason?
Since he came here so early, I doubt any name switching occured to avoid the draft, such as what happened to your friend's relative. Still, you just never know.
I think that the area of Germany that my ancestor came from may have changed borders over time. This could account for the different birth places given on the census and death record. I think it is important to keep in mind that the death information is always given by someone else and probably under duress; so, for birth information it is much less reliable.
THANK YOU so much for responding to my query. I'll keep this on file in case something comes up in my research. Happy hunting!!
