Of course Zeitlin is famous Hassidic name that came from lady's name Zeitl (see “Fiddler on the Roof" or read Sholom-Aleykhem “Tevie-Molochnik”). This name in this orthographic form is rather outstanding. Geographically it tied to Byelorussia in the places closed to origination of Hassidism. Lot persons with such names were published in Jewish Encyclopedia (Russia, 1913). The most known to me Zeitlin is Rabbi Hilel Zeitlin, who considered to be one of the most known religious authorities in Judaism. Another known Zeitlin was so named advisor of Russian General-Governor in Vilna (Lithuania). In Israel there is Zeitlin Street-one of central streets of Tel-Aviv. The main Academia of Judaism in Tel-Aviv is also bearing Zeitlin name. A known philanthropist Zeitlin emigrated from Russia to France. His wife’s sculpture is in Moscow’s Museum of Fine Arts. And so on… Due to strange soviet system for many Zeitlins their name has been transformed to Tseytlin or Tseitlin. From my Father Simkha Israel Zeitlin, who died on 1994 at Providence RI, I knew names of my ancestors for 5 generations. They are Simkha Israel, Israel Iakov, Iakov Simkha and Simkha Israel. I am living in Troy, Michigan. I have two sons Benjamin and Roman.
Dr. Alexander S. Zeitlin
