Zeman family in Chicago
I live in Dorset, England and I recently bought a book in a secondhand bookshop which has a diary scribbled into the margins and on the paper dustcover.
It appears to be by someone called Vera Zeman who was born on 28 August 1910, possibly in Czechoslovakia, or Berlin. By the 1920s the family had moved to Chicago, USA.
Vera was married on 13 January 1932. In the 1960s, Vera was living in New York, married to (but divorcing) a man called "Frank W". About that time, Vera moved to London and remained in England for the rest of her life.
She had friends or relations called "Jalwega" and "Halina". She may have also had a brother called Frank who died on 21 January 1988 (but it's not quite clear whether this may have been her ex-husband?) and this person's friends or family were called Martha, Anita and John.
I don't know how the book got to Dorset where I found it; but I'm very intrigued by this literary and feisty-sounding lady who loved her books and music. It appears that she had at least one brother back in the USA.
Does anyone know her or her background? Does anyone recognise the friends or family members that I've mentioned?
I would love to find the background to this lady whose very passionate jottings illuminate this book. I wonder most of all how it ended up in a secondhand shop in Dorset, Uk....the last diary entry is 17 September 1992.
Best wishes, Liz McGregor
