Posted by: Jim Veregge (ID *****1418) Date: July 21, 2007 at 14:21:59

After many years of research, the following is a four-generation report of the Zent family from the Northern Kraichgau, Germany area, to Lancaster/Dauphin County, Pennsylvania in the early 1700's. Would appreciate any information on earlier generations to: Delijim@aol.com

Descendants of Johann Martin Zend

Generation No. 1

1. JOHANN MARTIN1 ZEND was born Bef. 1684 in Germany. He married ANNA ???. She was born Bef. 1684 in Germany.

Notes for JOHANN MARTIN ZEND:
From "Eighteenth Century Emigrants from German-Speaking Lands of North America", Volume I: The Northern Kraichgau, by Annette Kunselman Burgert, pub. by The Pennsylvania German Society, Breiningsville, Pennsylvania, pg. 408:

613. Zend, Joh. Jacob

James Goodwill, 1728 (ship to America, arrived 9/11/1728)
S-H 22,23 (Name on (ship) list: Sinc, Zenck)

Michelfeld Lutheran and Adelshofen Lutheran KB:
Joh. Martin Zend and wife Anna had:
Hans Jacob, b. 27 Apr. 1701 at Michelfeld.
m. 4 May 1728 at Adelshofen, Johann Jacob, son of Joh. Martin Zend, citizen and inhabitant at Michelfeld, and Anna Catherina, daughter of Matthaeus Groner, citizen and butcher. "Both with to go to Pennsylvania".

Matthias Groner and wife Agnes Catharina nee Schlauch, had:
Johanna Catharina, b. 5 Apr. 1706 at Adelshofen

"Pennsylvania Records":
Muddy Creek Lutheran KB, Lancaster, County, Pennsylvania:
Jacob Zint, died, had:
1. Joh. Martin, b. 15 June, 1730
2. Joh. Michael, b. 4 Dec. 1732
3. Joh. Jacob, b. 24 Feb. 1735; sp. Joh. Jacob Schlauch (also from Adelshofen)

Record in Pennsylvania:

John George Hauck m. Anna Maria Zint, 11/2/1735 in Conestoga -
This would have made Anna Maria born before 1718, possible daughter, or possibly Johann's wife Anna may have re-married after Johann's death?

Child of JOHANN ZEND and ANNA ??? is:
2.       i.       HANS JACOB2 ZEND, b. 27 Apr 1701, Michelfeld, Kraichgau, Germany; d. Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Generation No. 2

2. HANS JACOB2 ZEND (JOHANN MARTIN1) was born 27 Apr 1701 in Michelfeld, Kraichgau, Germany1, and died in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He married JOHANNA CATHARINA GRONER 04 May 1728 in Adelshofen, Kraichgau, Germany2, daughter of MATTHIAS GRONER and AGNES SCHLAUCH. She was born 05 Apr 1706 in Adelshofen, Kraichgau, Germany3.

Notes for HANS JACOB ZEND:
Hans Jacob Zent is most probably the Jacob Sinc/Zenck (listed with both spellings) that was listed on the Passenger Ship List of the "James Goodwill", that sailed from Rotterdam to Philadelphia, Pennsylania and arrived on September 11, 1728, captained by David Crockett, master.

(List 8) James Goodwill
Captain: David Crockat
From: Rotterdam
By Way of: Deal
Arrival: Philadelphia, 11 Sep. 1728

Arrived with Johann Caspar Stover and Johan Caspar Stover, Jr. Both Stovers were famous Lutheran ministers. The father labored in Virginia, the son in Pennsylvania.
These families appear to have migrated together:

Name, Age Place of Origin Remarks
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Johann Jacob Zend, 27 Adelshofen, Sinc (also spelled)
Anna Catharina (Groner) Baden (Going to) Lancaster, PA

Johann Weyrich Bentz Adelshofen, Bants (also spelled)
Anna Barbara (Schlauch) Baden (Going to) Lancaster, PA

Hans Jacob Schlauch Adelshofen, Slauss (also spelled)
Anna Barbara Baden (Going to) Lancaster, PA
Johann Jacob, 20

Children of HANS ZEND and JOHANNA GRONER are:
       i.       JOHANN MARTIN3 ZENT, b. 15 Jun 1730, Muddy Creek, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania3.

Notes for JOHANN MARTIN ZENT:
No descendants of Johann Martin Zent have been located.

3.       ii.       JOHANN MICHAEL ZENT, b. 04 Dec 1732, Muddy Creek, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
4.       iii.       JOHANN JACOB G. ZENT, b. 24 Feb 1734/35, Muddy Creek, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; d. 01 Jun 1809, West Hanover Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

Generation No. 3

3. JOHANN MICHAEL3 ZENT (HANS JACOB2 ZEND, JOHANN MARTIN1) was born 04 Dec 1732 in Muddy Creek, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania3. He married CHARLOTTE MARIA ??? Bef. 1754 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Children of JOHANN ZENT and CHARLOTTE ??? are:
       i.       JOHANN CARL4 ZENT, b. 31 Aug 17544.

Notes for JOHANN CARL ZENT:
Possibly the "Charles Zent" that was listed as serving in Captain Daniel De Turck's Company of Berks County, Pennsylvania Associators, in July, 1776. Charles Zent listed as private. (source: Pennsylvania Archives, 3rd Series, Edited by William Henry Egle, M.D., Vol. XXIII, Harrisburg, PA, pub. 1897.

Johann Carl Zent may have had children that migrated to Perry County, Ohio. Listed in the 1850 census in Perry County, are the following:

Zent, John, Sr. , age 72, born in Pennsylvania (born 1778)
Zent, Elizabeth, age 68, born in Pennsylvania (born 1782)
Zent, John, Jr., age 29, born in Pennsylvania (born 1821)
Zent, Jana, age 25, born in Pennsylvania (born in 1825)
Zent, Thomas, age 1

This family does not seem to descend from Johann Jacob Zent (1735-1809), Johann Carl Zent's brother, who was the progenitor of most of the Zent family in Pennsylvania, and later Ohio and Indiana.

       ii.       CATHARINA ZENT, b. 09 Jan 17575.

4. JOHANN JACOB G.3 ZENT (HANS JACOB2 ZEND, JOHANN MARTIN1) was born 24 Feb 1734/35 in Muddy Creek, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania6, and died 01 Jun 1809 in West Hanover Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He married MARGARET ??? Bef. 1763 in Pennsylvania. She was born Bef. 1745.

Notes for JOHANN JACOB G. ZENT:
Much circumstantial data exists to surmise Jacob Zent as the son of Hans Jacob Zend. Several researchers had determined that Jacob Zent was the immigrant ancestor, but with data from "Eighteenth Century Emigrants from German-Speaking Lands to North America" by Annette K. Burgert, the immigrant ancestor is most probably Jacob's father, Hans Jacob Zend, who came to America (Philadelphia) from Adelshofen, Kraichgau, Germany on September 11, 1728 aboard the "James Goodwill". This supports "family tradition" that Jacob arrived from Germany in 1728 (according to many stories). Records in Muddy Creek Lutheran Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, show the birth of Johann Jacob Zint (Zent) on 24 February, 1735. This appears to be the Jacob Zent who lived in Lancaster (and later Dauphin) County, Pennsylvania and left descendents there. Jacob and his family must have stayed in the Muddy Creek area for some time, since his son, Jacob, b. 1763, was married at Swamp Reformed Church on May 3, 1785, by Rev. John Waldschmidt (Pennsylvania Archives, Sol. 6, pg. 229), who was the pastor at Muddy Creek Reformed Church (now called Peace United Church of Christ, East Cocalico Township) from 1752-1786. Rev. Waldschmidt's records are published in Pennsylvania Archives, 6th series, Vol. 6, pgs. 153+. Swamp Reformed Church was located in nearby West Cocalico Township, and Rev. Waldschmidt and many of his successor's apparently preformed ceremonies in both churches, due to their close proximity. Jacob paid Tax in West Hanover Township in Dauphin County (formed from Lancaster County in 1785) in 1786. He was listed in nearby Annville Township (this may be his son Jacob) in 1800. He was living in West Hanover at the time of his death in 1809 (according to his will). Served as Private in the Revolutionary War in the 8th Company of the 6th Battallion of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania under Captain Michael Moyer. (Pennsylvania Archives, 5th series, Volume VII, pg. 561).

Jacob was possibly related to Charles and Frederick Zent, who are shown in early records in neighboring Berks County, Pennsylvania. Charles Zent is listed as having served as a private in Captain deTurk's Company of Berks County Associators, in service July, 1776 through 1778. Frederick Zent is listed as having paid State tax of 1.5.0 in the city of Philadelphia in 1779

Jacob died June 1, 1809 in Hanover Township, Dauphin County, Penn. His will was dated 12/1/1808 and proved 7/29/1811. He named his son Jacob and son-in-law John Snyder as the executors of his will. (Will Book C, page 126; Accounting papers of estate - Dauphin County, Court House - File 40, Paper 3, Harrisburg, Penn. Also copy of will and accounting - Ref. Book R, page 505, filed in 1810)

Green and now dec'd; Nancy's children; Son John, dec'd., has 4 children; the clothing belonging to me or my deceased wife are to be disposed of be my executors amony my heirs at private sale, if that cannot be done, then to the poor. Executors: Grandson Samuel Miller, son of my daughter Catherine, dec'd and Samuel Myers married to my grandaughter Susanna, being a daughter of my son John Zent, dec'd. An additional executor was Jacob Eberly, married to my grandaughter Polly, daughter of my son John Zent, dec'd. (Penn. Achives, 5th series, Vol. 7, p. 561)

Jacob was incorrectly identified as serving in the Revolutionary War under Captain Michael Moyer, 1778-1779 in "American Revolutionary Soldiers of Franklin County, Pennsylvania". This is unlikely since he would have been 15 years old at the time. (This was his father, Jacob.) However, he most probably was the Jacob Zent that served in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1784 with Capt. Reams 6th Battallion, 3rd Class (Penn. Archives 6th series, Vol. 3, p. 541,548), and "Return of Male" 4th Compamy, 1st Battallion of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania in 1786 (Penn. Archives 6th series, Vol. 3, p. 359). Since Dauphin County was established in 1785 (previously part of Lancaster County), this would explain the different locations.

Here's what I know about grandmother Polly Zent. Her birthdate is Mar 19,
1799 and she was born in PA, she married John Wingert/Wingard on March 8,
1821. John was born in Franklin County PA Sept 13, 1798. Polly and John
moved from PA to Stark County, OH sometime during the 1820's and they had four
children, 3 sons and one daughter.

Today at the library I learned that Jacob Zent also lived in Franklin County
(1830 census) and he probably had 6 daughters and 2 sons. Jacob lived in
Dauphin county in 1790. His wife's name was Susannah.

Thanks Jim. There is much good info in your data. I'm not sure how much might be new as I did a pretty good job collecting Wingard data last summer. It will take some careful comparisons to refresh my memory and to discover any differences between your file and the others.

---- It's this reference to Montgomery County Kansas that I had seen before, can't remember where. Perhaps it was a posting by Lee Wingard or James Shafer??? When I first saw it, I think I assumed that it involved a migration of John Wingard and Polly Zent to Kansas. Thinking more about it, however, they would have been getting a bit old for such an endeavor. What I think really happened, is that their son Joseph Wingard migrated and stopped in DeKalb, Indiana. His son John E. Wingard (with Ella and sons) went to Kansas and became Montgomery County settlers. The reference in the Mont. County History is likely a mention of John E. Wingard's Ohio based grandparents. Well that's the theory. Will have to get a look at the actual history book some day.

Seems most probable then, that John Wingard and Polly Zent stayed and died in Stark County. Any clues there would be appreciated. Meanwhile, I'll scrub Stark County records a bit on line.

Turns out that the Wingard farm property which was turned over to John's sons Frank and Homer, was just a few miles north of where I lived for a few years in Independence Kansas. My wife's family (Theodore Wingard and Lucille Salsbury, son of E.T. Wingard, grandson of B.F. Wingard, ggrandson of Jacob Wingard....) also lived in Independence where Ted came to work for Sinclair Pipeline company in the late 1940's. Turns out that they were aware of the other clan of Wingards in Independence but thought they were not related -- farmers, go to different church, etc! When I was tracking this Wingard data, I discovered that they all shared the same GGGGrandparents - John Wingert and Polly Zent. Wonder what they'd have thought or done if they'd known how they were related?

I've got a couple photographs of B.F. Wingard, Avarintha, E.T. Wingard, Carma (Fried) Wingard on disk if you are collecting such stuff. They can be large files to copy, especially if they are not in your primary line of research!!! so I won't bother you with them here. Can send if you desire.

He married BARBARA SHUEY Abt. 1784 in Pennsylvania, daughter of JOHANNAS SHUEY and CATHARINE CONRAD. She was born Bef. 1768 in Pennsylvania, and died Aft. 1860 in prob. Morrow County, Ohio.

Notes for JOHN ZENT:
Family tradition and some accounts claim that John died at the age of 107. It would appear that this account is in error, based upon sources found to date.

John served in the Pennsylvania Militia 1790-1800 in Colonel Valentine Shoufflers Regiment No. 4 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. (Penn Archives 6th series, Vol. 5, p. 289)

1790 Census, Dauphin County, PA lists:

John Lentz (s/b Zent?) with: 1 male 16+, 2 females (note: this listing is on same page as Martin, Ludwig and Christian Shuey) This listing also would have agreed with John's family in 1790 before his son Jacob was born. At the time, John and Barbara had 1 daughter, Betsey, born in 1788.

John and his family moved to Knox County, Ohio, between 1800 and 1803 (possibly later in light of 1810 Census listing in Dauphin County, PA); he was a farmer. John was listed as Johannes Aent filed in Wheeling, West Virginia.

1810 Census, Hanover Township, Dauphin County, PA - 1 female 26-45, 1 female over 45, 2 males under 10, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 26-45. (Listed as John Zantz).

John was listed as the third settler of Jefferson Township; he came to Jefferson Township (in 1810) and settled west of Bellville a short distance. (SW 1/4 of section 7) (History of Richland County, Ohio - Biographical Sketch of Jefferson Township, p 814)

Saw on genforum your message of compiling 15 years of Zent genealogy from Pa and Ohio.
I have been researching my Zent line of Pa, Oh, and In.. My Zent are German Descendant.
Do you have records on the following Zents-that were Pennsylvania Dutch? What is your ancestor line?

Jacob Zent-d. 1809 West Hanover Twp.-Dauphin Co. Penn.
John Zent Sr.-d. at the age of 107--he was the 3rd settler of Jefferson Twp.Ohio; came from Harrisburg,Pa to Wheeling, then to Fairfield Co. Oh, Richland Co. Ohio near Bellville Ohio; to Jefferson Twp. Indiana in Huntington County near Bellville and Warren Indiana.
Jacob Zent b. 1784 Pa. d. 1878 age 94. m. Sarah 'Sallie' Coon of Penn.
George W. Zent b. 3/31/1832 Richland Co. Ohio m. Lydia A. Bushnog b.12/25/1833 Richland Co. Ohio-same homeplace George was born. They never knew each other or familly until later in adulthood when they met. They married Dec. 14, 1852 in Richland Co. Ohio, Bellville,Oh. Lydia d. 6/22/1906 Huntington Co.-Warren, Indiana
I would appreciate any records on this family line of Zents. There are many Zents in Huntington County Indiana. Most had large families. There one branch I'm trying to see if they connect to mine. They give their line from Richland Co. Ohio and Stark Co. to Huntington Co. Ind. Were from Lancaster Co. Pennsylvania (mennonite). Possibly Switzerland.
Thanks,
W. Van Ness of Florida; b. Grant Co. Indiana

From Wilma Van Ness:

Jacob and Sarah (Coon) Zent had 13 children, 10 reached maturity, 5 were living as of 1901.

Hi I am researching Martin Zent b. 1830 OH D. 1881 Montcalm Co. MI. Married Rebecca Provalt in 1858 Huntington Co., IN. I believe his father is Martin Zent b. 1800 in PA, but have no proof except census records which show movement of my Martin's siblings from OH, IN to MI.....Any help would greatly be appreciated.
Thank you!

Hello,
I saw your query on the Zent family on the Knox County Ohio web
page. I don't believe I have ever responded to you. I am also looking
into ZENT family in Knox County. My great great grandfather, John Zent
was born in an unknown town in Knox county on 12/27/1827. I believe his
father was Daniel. John spent some of his years in Huntington County
Indiana.
If you know more about his family, I would appreciate communicating
with you.
