1790s-1900s MD - marriages, wills, deeds
Posted by: Mark Amanns Date: June 06, 2000 at 11:13:46
In Reply to: Sigerfoos/Sickafus family...MD: OH IN IL by Mark Amanns of 228

I just visited several counties in Maryland and nothern West Virginia and am listing here what I found. The earliest names are closest to "ZIEGENFUSS", such as "Siegonfoos" but in the 1800s the spellings are SIGAFOOSE or SEGAFOOSE (many stayed in the MD area) and SIGERFOOS or SICKAFUS (went to OH/IN/IL/MI in 1820s-30s). It appears an early branch went to western PA (New Castle) and eastern OH (Stark County). Also, I make a guess that another early branch quickly left MD and moved to central WV (using the ZICKEFOOSE spelling).

These records are grouped by county and type of source. I have made comments on some items, but much of it is left up to you to search and identify, if possible, the connections between these individuals. These records are by no means complete. I only visited a few counties. Sometimes I just skimmed the indexes and left. Other researchers may be able to add to these records on future visits to Maryland and West Virginia.

SIGAFOOSE, JOHN SCOLL
(1853-1948) Honored 1976
Young Scoll Sigafoose was a mule driver on the C&O Canal for
Jordan & Wenner, who shipped grain to Washington. Along with
John Ball, he also operated a ferry from Berlin to Virginia.
Scoll also tended bar in a saloon in Knoxville when Bars and
saloons were prohibited in Berlin-Brunswick because of the
railroad. In the early 1900's he was made a policeman in
Brunswick. He was locktender for the C&O from 1910 to 1924,
when the canal closed after being devastated by a flood.
(Mark's notes: The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal that flowed from
Cumberland to Washington DC, completed in 1850, was to open
up the west but was quickly outdated by the railroads.
Knoxville was a mile and a half west of Berlin. Likely this
is the John S. Sigafoose who married Anna A. Staub, license
dated 21 May 1875.)
