Below are some alternate spellings of Ziegelmeyer I've run across during my research. I'm not sure if theses are all changed from ZIEGELMEYER or if they were originally spelled this way. I do know that in the Cincinnati area we have relatives that changed from MEYER to MEIER.
I also talked to one of the ZIEGELMAIERs in Iowa who told me that one of the members of their family spelled their name MEYER and pronounced the last part with a long "i' sound while they pronounced theirs with a long "a" sound. Again I'm not sure which version came first.
Mike Sigelmier posted an earlier message to the group explaining that his Grandfather changed their name from ZIEGELMEYER to their present spelling in order to sound more America. Not an uncommon thing for Germans to do during the WWs.
Often difficult names were misspelled on immigrant ship lists. It took me awhile to find our immigrant in a ship list because they spelled our name ZIGELMAIER. I wasn't familiar with Soundex then.
So if you run into a road block researching this name try searching some of these variants. If anyone has any additional variations please post them.
