I am trying to trace my husband's family. His grandfather was Charlie (probably not the name he was given at birth) Ziek, born about 1885, in Shpola, near Kiev, Ukraine. He came to America with his parents, in about 1898. He had a sister, Manya, and a brother, Morris. They came to escape the pogroms.
Charlie died in 1930 in New York City.
Charlie was the son of Ben Sion Ziek and Shifra, maiden name unknown.
Charlie married Molly Chodrow who was born in Medvin, also near Kiev, Ukraine. She lived from about 1885 to 1978. I remember Grandma Molly as a strong, independent woman, proud of her musically talented children.
My husband and his family think the name may have been changed at Ellis Island but there is little family lore about what the name may have been before.
Does any of this sound familiar to anybody out there?
