According to Henry B. Shufelt's book, "Our Folks", a professor who is an expert on nomenclature told him that it means "Dwellers of the Open". Others say it means "An enclosed field"; and a German who was consulted say ZU means closed and FELD means field. He also said that the ZU is pronounced much like STU with the T hardly perceptible; so it can be seen how the name easily developed into "SHUFELT". and if the meaning of the name is an indication of the occupation of our ancestors, then they were undoubtably farmers.
