I am also a descendant of Peter Shewfelt and Anna Marie Kester, through their daughter, Catherine (1803-1895), who was married to Peter Ryckman (1799-1876). They were married in 1826 in Markham ON. They lived in Markham Tp for a time before moving to Brock Tp, Ontario County, ON. We believe that Catherine was born in the Hamilton area but that is as close as we can pin it down.
I have never encountered any info to suggest that Peter Shewfelt fought in the War of 1812 but it seems reasonable that he should have been required to serve in one of the militia regiments somewhere in the area.
Peter Shewfelt's land petition of 1796 says that he came from Sussex County NJ. So far, I have not been able to find any referenece to the Shewfelts/Shufelts/Zufelts/etc. in the present-day NJ counties of Sussex or Warren.
