Jacob and Sarah Zumwalt of Boone County, Missouri
There was so much incorrect information given to the late Helynn Carrier for her book “One Zumwalt Family” that it is very hard to know what is right based on facts or wrong based on hearsay.
Currently, we are only interested in getting our line corrected regarding the mysterious Jacob Zumalt that married the mysterious Sarah Zumalt in Callaway County, Missouri on August 18, 1836.
In the marriage record, Jacob is from St. Charles County, Missouri and Sarah is from Callaway County, Missouri. “One Zumwalt Family” has this Jacob as a son of both Jacob Zumwalt “Junior” and Andrew P. Zumwalt. He is the son of Andrew P. who lived in St. Charles County until 1847 when he moved to Pike County, Illinois. Sarah is the daughter of Jacob Zumwalt (son of Christopher) and Sarah Hostetter. “One Zumwalt Family” has this Sarah married to John Winterbower and died 10 February 1876; however, all records have her sister, Elizabeth, married to John Winterbower.
About 15 years ago, we found Sarah still alive in the 1880 Federal Census in Henry County, Missouri and just a few houses away from her oldest son, Andrew. Her son, Samuel, and daughter, Nancy Jane, are living with her. She states she is 60 years old and that her father was from Pennsylvania and her mother was from Maryland. In the marriage record of Jacob Zumwalt and Sarah Hostetter, he is from Pennsylvania and she is from Maryland.
On a recent visit to Callaway County we found the older Jacob’s probate record. His heirs were:
1. Widow Sarah (Hostetter)
2. Son Jacob (married Nancy Zumwalt in 1850 in Callaway County)
3. Daughter Elizabeth and her husband John Winterbower
4. Daughter Sarah and her husband St. Charles Jacob Zumwalt
5. Daughter Mary and her husband Josiah Burket
6. Son Joseph
7. Daughter Eliza and her husband John Spry
8. Son David
9. Daughter Christine Harryman
In a land conveyance on 23 July 1853, the younger Jacob and his wife Sarah are referred to as “St. Charles Jacob Zumwalt and Sarah his wife of the County of Boone” and also as “St. Charles Jacob Zumwalt and Sarah Zumwalt his wife (and daughter of the Jacob Zumwalt deceased)”. All serious Zumwalt researchers are aware of the nicknames given to the various Jacobs.
As to Jacob dying of Civil War injuries – this has not been proven. His brother Nathan Heald Zumwalt states that Jacob died “during” the Civil War in Missouri. There is a Jacob Zumwalt that was ordered into Active Service on 16 June 1863 at Columbia, Boone County. By 15 August, he was “absent, sick”. On 31 October 1863 he was still “absent, sick”. He was relieved from duty 14 November 1863. This indicates he must have been very ill. His last child, Nancy J., was born about 1864.
Jacob and Sarah’s oldest known child, Andrew, was born 2 March 1840. Many people have said his middle name is Jacob. We do not know what this is based on as we have never found him using a middle initial until recently.
Andrew enlisted in the Union Army on 5 March 1862. He was mustered in 22 April 1862 at Columbia and was under Captain Cook in Company F. He was mustered out 21 April 1865. On the same day, still under Captain Cook, he reenlisted and was ordered in to active service. He was relieved from duty 31 July 1865. The war was over by then. An interesting discovery we made was, that when he reenlisted, he was a Corporal and was listed as Andrew P. Zumalt. He may have been named for his grandfather, Andrew P. Zumwalt.
